Splitting Hairs - What Can You Do About Split Ends

Friday, February 29th, 2008

By Jane Preeter Isn’t it a shame when you have to worry about coveringsplit ends (or trichoptlosis)-the bane of every self-respecting woman’s life! They happen when the protectivecuticle has been stripped away from the ends of hairfibers. Split ends are more likely to develop in dry orbrittle hair, and typical causes of damage includeexcessive dying or vigorous brushing. Once the hair cuticle is removed, it is impossible toreplace. Typically, the hair splits into two or threestrands, and can be as long or two to three centimeters inlength. The best treatment is to cut off the split end ofthe damaged fiber. But you don’t necessarily have to go to the salon everyweek to keep your split ends in check. Back in the sixtiesand seventies, women used to burn off their split ends!Sure that’s a little excessive. And there are easier waysto get rid of those dead ends before they split further…do-it-yourself hair trims. These do-it-yourself trimming tips are for women who arehappy with their hair; for those who don’t need a restyle, but simply want to freshen things up with a ‘homegrown’sort of look. If you are in any doubt, leave it for theprofessionals! To Remove Split Ends: * Take small sections of hair and carefully twist them in agentle downward motion. Any split ends will automatically stick out. * Carefully snip into the twist with sharp scissors. Don’tcut right through; just cut into the thickness to removethe damaged cuticles and give a natural layered effect. * Be careful to cut roughly the same amount from eachtwist.Remember, sometimes the simplest, and least expensive, ideas are the best. So get trimming! You’ll not only save abundle but also time that will ease your life. Discover all you ever wanted to know about hair. Plagued By Disaster, Humanity Turns To Faith

Wednesday, February 27th, 2008

By Stephanie Schorow Faced with fears of a pandemic like the avian flu or worried about mad cow disease, Ebola or Hantavirus, modern society typically looks to science and medicine to explain and thus avert disaster. But in the history of civilization, this is a recent development. During humanitys worst biomedical disaster, the Black Death of 1347 to 1350, when neither scholar nor priest could stem the tide of the plague, people took comfort in a wrathful God. Amid what appeared to be the end of the world, 14th-century citizenry believed that humanitys own sins and follies caused the terrible disease devastating Europe. Such knowledge may have helped fulfill the human need to find meaning in the madness, noted John Kelly, author of the 2005 book The Great Mortality: An Intimate History of the Black Death, the Most Devastating Plague of All Time. We have an inherent sense, probably genetic, to find order in chaos, he said. We need that in order to function. Thats one thing religion gives us. European civilization despite a population drop of 30 percent and several subsequent plague outbreaks continued. The religious response to the plague, moreover, produced acts of generosity and self-sacrifice as well as terrible acts of misdirected vengeance. Today, the concept that God has caused a calamity as punishment for human sin whether the AIDS epidemic or the Asian tsunami is viewed skeptically by most mainstream religious leaders. Yet it is a concept that lingers, whether in assertions that Hurricane Katrina whacked New Orleans for its wicked ways or in evangelist Pat Robertsons conclusion that God caused Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharons stroke. Evidence suggests that the Black Death was bubonic plague, carried by fleas and spread by rats. In the Middle Ages, however, medical science was utterly baffled by the plague, said Franco Mormando, associate professor of Italian studies at Boston College and an expert on plague-related fine art. No one knew how it spread. Folk remedies were to no avail and astrology found no solutions in the stars or the movement of Saturn. The church had a very simple answer: The ultimate cause of the plague is an angry God who is punishing humanity for its sinfulness, Mormando said. Its a terrible message and theologically wrong, but the consolation is having a ready answer. Thus, the only way to truly ward off the disease was to lead a Christian life a benefit both to plague victims and society. While many people fled cities or barricaded themselves in homes, a surprising number chose to care for stricken family or friends. This was evidenced by the number of people surrounding someone at a time of death as recorded in surviving bequests and wills. Many priests left their posts or charged extraordinary fees for services, many others stayed to serve and succumbed with their flocks, Kelly said. With cities falling into ruin, people didnt turn away from religion it became more private and less institutional, he said. The religious impulse also found its away into fine art. Certainly the macabre dance of death skeleton motifs lingered in art and literature for decades. However, many painters took another approach, as shown in Hope and Healing: Painting in Italy in a Time of Plague 1500-1800, a landmark exhibit Mormando helped organize in 2005 at the Worcester Art Museum in Massachusetts. Contrary to expectation, many plague-related paintings did not document the destruction, rather, the final role of art was to be a mirror of hope and healing, Mormando said. The paintings in the exhibit used only symbols of the plague (such as people holding their noses because of victims stench) and featured saints associated with the disease St. Sebastian, St. Roche, St. Rosalie and St. Michael the archangel. These served as reminders of their abiding availability as intercessors and saviors, Mormando said. Paintings were often commissioned by local authorities for public display, creating messages about the great resource of human charity. What we call social services collapsed so society depended even more on the kindness of individuals, Mormando said. Religious excess created horrors during the plague years. Rumors that Jews were spreading the plague by poisoning well water sparked violent attacks on Jews in Germany and France. According to the University of Minnesotas Center for Holocaust and Genocide Studies, 2,000 Jews were burned alive in Strasbourg in 1349. Thus, the search for sin often targeted innocent scapegoats, although, Kelly noted, Pope Clement issued two bulls in 1348 condemning attacks on Jews. Groups of Flagellants, including both monks and laypeople, roamed the streets publicly whipping themselves so as to bear Gods punishment for all humanity themselves. Unfortunately, these groups of people, often carrying plague-carrying fleas, roamed from town to town, Kelly said. Even the act of bringing people together in churches could spread the disease. Eventually local authorities realized the value of quarantines when outbreaks occurred. And, for whatever reason, subsequent outbreaks of the plague, which continued into the 18th century, were less devastating. By the time of the massive flu outbreak of 1918, which according to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services Center for Disease Control and Prevention, killed as many as 40 million worldwide, medical science had replaced theology in the search for solutions. Yet, the tendency to attribute disaster to divine retribution lingers even today. The need to see order in chaos may be something we need to survive, Kelly said. Kids Goodie Bags: Party Favors to Savor

Sunday, February 24th, 2008

By Gail Leino It is important at kids parties to make sure everyone gets a chance to win. Nobody should leave the party without a goodie bag. Kids goodie bags usually contain candy and sweets, but most guests have eaten cake and ice cream, and good alternate choices are pencils, glitter pens, gel pens, stickers, small writing pads, diaries, journals, homemade CDs with music from the party, special crafts made at the party, and printed, personalized coloring books. First, consider the theme of the party. If you are having a beach or pool theme party, kids goodie bags can be sand pails and shovels. These can contain things they made at the party and some extra take home surprises, or they can be assembled and even wrapped in clear wrap, to be handed out as the children leave the party. The good thing about kids is that they are always easy to please, and excited to receive kids goodie bags. If you are having a garden theme party, a wonderful kids goodie bag would be a small watering can with flower seeds, lace gloves, and costume jewelry. Blues Clues is a wonderful opportunity to teach kids the responsibility of pet ownership, while teaching that giving is the best part of receiving. Make arrangements with the local animal shelter ahead of time, for a party field trip (but be sure to clear it ahead of time with the parents, in case any guest has allergies or animal fears.) Play games with doggie treats (homemade or purchased) as the prize for winning, and after games are played, each child should have a small bag of animal treats. Enlist the aid of other licensed drivers, and take the party to the animal shelter, so the kids can share their prizes with the unfortunate, homeless animals. If children are to have any hands on contact with animals, be certain to obtain permission slips from parents. Provide antibacterial hand wipes and rub on hand sanitizer as a part of each kids goodie bag to keep it clean! First, consider the theme of the party. Achieving a More Youthful Figure with a Tummy Tuck and Liposuction of the Iliac Areas

Wednesday, February 20th, 2008

By Christine Harrell While no one has found a way to literally turn back the hands of time, there are certain target areas of the body that can promote a more youthful appearance. One of the most significant ideologies of youth is a flat stomach. For many women, attaining a flat stomach without a tummy tuck and liposuction of the iliac areas in the location sometimes called the love handles can seem nearly impossible, especially after pregnancy. Why are flat stomachs a sign of youth and attractiveness?A flat stomach also represents the wildly attractive characteristic of good health. The paunch of visible fat is in indicator of a much more deadly type of visceral fat packed around the organs. While a tummy tuck and liposuction of the iliac areas removes the unsightly subcutaneous layer of fat just under the skin, neither remove the deep-seeded visceral fat. Staying in shape after a tummy tuck and liposuction of the iliac areas. After achieving a flatter stomach with a liposuction and tummy tuck, keeping fat off is critical. Iliac area liposuction and tummy tucks shouldnt be a cure for the battle of the bulge, but instead a way to start a fresh new lifestyle that promotes health and a more youthful appearance. A diet rich in fruits and vegetables along with cardiovascular exercise can work wonders to keep fat off and eliminate the dangerous visceral fat around the organs. Who is the best candidate for a tummy tuck and liposuction of the iliac areas? A tummy tuck is a procedure for shaping and contouring the body by removing excess skin. The best candidates are those who have extra skin and some stubborn fat deposits left over after losing weight or giving birth. Those who also wish to remove larger quantities of fat around their middle will want to combine liposuction of the iliac areas with a tummy tuck to achieve a thinner waistline and more youthful figure. As with any plastic surgery, those in good physical health and realistic expectations are quality candidates for plastic surgery. Other procedures utilized in patients interested in tummy tuck. Individuals interested in tummy tuck complain not only of the bulges in the tummy at the iliac or love handle areas but of a dumpy or short waisted look. In post partum women one of the most effective treatments involves not the waist but the breasts. Ptotic drooping breasts produce a short waisted appearance that may be corrected with a breast lift or mastopexy. Often these procedures may be combined with a tummy tuck and liposuction to good effect. Lifting the breast changes the balance creating a longer slimmer profile that is sometimes aided by a change in the breast size if desired. Women usually know best and are able to visualize the changes they desire. Author is a professional copywriter and the cofounder of nGenuity Solutions. Weed Control Basics (UK) — A Quick Read

Saturday, February 16th, 2008

By Val Scaresbrook Know your enemy The old saying is probably right ‘One year’s seeding means seven years weeding.’ Some weeds grow from seeds which may be in the soil or brought on the wind or by birds; other weeds re-grow from pieces of root. Annuals (eg groundsel, rose-bay willow-herb, chickweed): Annual weeds are those which produce seed in the same year that they began to grow. They produce many seeds which are ready to grow during the next mild period of weather. Control annual weeds by hoeing. This chops off the stems at ground level, and the roots cannot re-grow. Or control them by digging the ground over so that you bury the weeds on the surface. Don’t let annual weeds grow large enough to flower and seed, otherwise you’ll have an even bigger problem later. If you don’t have time to hoe every week, at least remove the flowers, so that seeds cannot be produced. Hoe weedy and bare areas every week to kill visible weeds and disturb just-germinated seeds below the surface. Newly germinated seedlings won’t survive this treatment unless there is a lot of rain. Perennial (long-lived) weeds (eg couch (twitch), dandelion, dock, thistle, bindweed, horsetail, ground elder, Japanese knotweed): These live from year to year and can send up new shoots from their roots, so they survive hoeing to begin with. But if hoeing is continued weekly, the pieces of root will eventually become exhausted and unable to produce any more shoots. Hoeing off shoots cuts off new food supplies to the root. There’s no need to pick up weeds after hoeing, unless they have flower heads (the flowers could still develop and produce seeds) or you want to do some work in the area. Keep your hoe sharp by using a file. Problem areas Mechanical solutions Overgrown areas are best cut down to the ground first, using a billhook, scythe, rotary mower (hire a tough one) or brushcutter. Then rake the debris off and dig over the soil with a spade or plough. A cultivator stirs the soil up rather than burying the original surface, but is also useful. Any of these methods gives you bare soil which is easier to hoe than a weedy patch. Chemical solutions — herbicides Alternatively, clear the ground with a weedkiller. First decide whether you have annual or perennial weeds — if unsure, assume that there are perennial weeds present. Study the bottles of weedkiller in the garden centre and make sure you choose one designed for the problem. Although there are numerous trade names, there are only a few actual chemicals - these are listed as the active ingredient(s). The active ingredient named glyphosate (such as in Roundup) is taken up by the plant’s leaves so eventually the roots are killed. This takes a while, so take note of instructions on the label, especially about the ideal size of weed to be treated. It’s better for there to be several leaves on the weed so that more chemical can be taken up. But an old established plant may need several applications before it’s killed. For small areas of weeds, or for spot control of a few weeds, buy a ready-to-use weedkiller in a spray container. Then there’s no mixing needed. Do not mix weedkillers (or any other garden chemicals) in the kitchen. Weedkillers are, after all, designed to kill, so should not come near food or drink or your skin. Take a bucket of water outside so you have plenty for mixing, washing out the sprayer afterwards, and washing your gloves. Keep a pair of rubber gloves for use with chemicals, and store them in the shed or garage. Don’t spray in windy weather, otherwise you risk spray in your face and on your neighbour’s plants. Residual weedkillers An overgrown area contains a great deal of weed seed in the soil, which you can prevent from germinating for months and months by using a type of weedkiller called a residual. Various types prevent seeds germinating for a certain length of time, from a certain depth of soil. But if you disturb the soil, the weedkiller becomes ineffective. If you intend to plant or sow in the area in the near future, make sure that the weedkiller is suitable. Some residuals must not be used around newly planted shrubs, or plants susceptible to damage, so read the label before buying and using. Mulching Most weed seed germinates when exposed to light - this means that only seed near to the soil’s surface will grow. A mulch makes the soil’s surface darker and suppresses weeds. But perennial weeds can still grow through this, so must be dug out, hoed off for a season or sprayed, before a mulch is applied. At least a two-inch depth of organic material is essential to inhibit seed germination. Use well-rotted compost or bark chippings. Top up the layer each year with a small amount of material. Some weeds will still appear, from seeds blown onto the top of the mulch, but these are easy to pull out. If your garden compost has not heated up enough, weed seeds could still be present and grow. If you think your compost heap won’t kill weed seeds, don’t put flowering weeds (or roots of dandelion, couch etc) onto the heap, but bin them (in the council’s garden waste bin if you have one). An alternative mulch for a large area is old carpet or thick black polythene (anchored down) which will suppress weeds, kill any already growing, and buy you some time until you can deal with the area. However, this does encourage slugs. In areas already planted up, you could use sheets of woven material that allows water through (such as Plantex) beneath bark or compost mulch, to prevent worms from dragging the mulch into the soil. Another possibility is to plant something that will spread but that will be easy to pull up when you want to make use of the area - something like the cranesbill Geranium sanguineum is ideal because it spreads quickly, provides evergreen cover with spring flowers, but is easy to pull up and doesn’t self seed. West Bend Waterless Cookware - A New Wave

Friday, February 15th, 2008

By Riley Hendersen The West Bend waterless cooker was a breakthrough idea when it was originated by the West Bend company in the 1920s. Described as a “waterless cooker,” the object in question is a large pot with pans inset so that an entire meal could be cooked over a single burner. It was designed so the lid of the cooker had clamps that could prevent steam from escaping out of the pot while cooking the meal. This allowed for meals to be cooked without having to add any water, since the water from the food itself would remain in the pot because the steam could no longer escape. The reason the words “waterless cooker” will almost always be hooked to the West Bend company is that in the 1920s, when the first example of waterless cookware was invented, the West Bend company not only had the patent for the hooks on the lid, but they also patented the name “waterless cooker.” It is still designed specifically for cooking that doesn’t need to add water, but steams food based on the moisture that is already trapped within the food itself. The cookware is made from stainless steel that is specifically designed to evenly distribute and trap heat. If this is the first time you have heard of this type of cookware, that may be because it is unique in many ways, and will most often be sold through “home parties,” because how this type of cookware works is most easily explained through showing. While not often found at most retail chains, the advent of technology and online stores means more is bought over the web than ever before. Some waterless cookware sets have a carbon steel layer at its core, which makes that variety appropriate for using specifically on an induction range. This type of cooking is increasingly popular because it doesn’t matter what kind of an oven or range one is using to cook, using this cookware is energy-efficient. Since it is made out of stainless steel, like all cookware made of the same material, it will be durable. West Bend waterless cookware is quality stainless steel, and not only is it energy saving, but because of the lower heat needed to cook, less nutrients are lost in preparation, meaning the food will be healthier for you while losing none of the taste. In fact, there are those who prefer the waterless cookware for many meals, claiming that it keeps more of the natural flavor and makes the food actually taste better. While a long time has passed since the original idea for the waterless cookware came into being, it is an idea that has proven its worth over time. The West Bend waterless cookware still exists, is still going strong, and is favored by many as some of the best cookware in their entire kitchen. Still looking for the perfect cookware? Relationship Rescue, Just What You Need To Start Afresh

Thursday, February 14th, 2008

By Terry Ross Those early days in a relationship are the easy ones when everything about your partner is seen through rose tinted glasses and any character flaws are overlooked in favour of those adorable features that make everything so perfect. Needless to say, not a thought goes to how you keep that perfect catch or what it takes to make a long term relationship work. The whole concept that you would ever be seeking help for a failing relationship, to rescue it from ultimate disaster, is a totally alien concept. Relationships are complex things, the ground rules are ever changing, people change, times change and situations change, sometimes its just really hard to keep up. It doesnt mean to say that you no longer love each other and it doesnt mean to say you cant sort problems out but it does mean that youve had a wake up call, an advanced warning that you need to drop the complacency, do something to help your relationship, rescue it before its too late. Relationship rescue in many cases isnt too hard, relationships usually respond well to a little time and effort, some understanding, a little give an take and quite often alls it takes is a little TLC. Often you can trace the initial breakdown in a relationship back to lack of communication, so in looking at what you need to do to rescue a relationship communication is generally the first port of call. When you consider the consequences, the final nail in the coffin, and the main reason why someone goes in search of guidance for their failing relationship, to rescue it and save it from final break up, most things can be traced back to prove that communication failure was the root cause. Even major betrayals such as infidelity can often be traced back to a communication breakdown. People can spend weeks, months or years unhappy in their relationship and, in their eyes, begging for things to get sorted out, but from their partners point of view everything appears OK. You might ask just how can that happen, how can one partner so obviously see that something is wrong and the other carry on regardless, presumably happy in the knowledge that their relationship is rock solid? Its pretty obvious when you think about it. Just consider how information gets passed from one person to another and how it gets slightly misinterpreted at every stage until what the last person in the chain hears bears no relation to what was said in the beginning. Once you put everything into the right perspective it is easy to understand how, even the apparently most perfect couple can just get it wrong, misinterpret a situation, perhaps over a period of time and gradually the relationship can start to crack. At the end of the day relationships can be minefields, especially if you take your eye off the ball and most relationships struggle at some point, but the majority can be rescued if at least one of the partners recognises there is a problem and takes action. Relationships are complex and can be difficult at times, but with most things in this ever changing world or ours, relationships just take a little time and effort to keep on top. Relationships need to be respected, nurtured and cared for, partners have to understand that relationships rarely just bumble along (and survive) without a little effort to keep them alive. Relationships need intimacy, surprises, and that all too forgotten relationship time. Just because people live together it doesnt mean to say the relationship no longer requires attention and that the partners no longer need to feel special. If couples loose sight of what bought them together it is so easy to loose focus as to where they are heading. If youve come in search of relationship rescue take some time and put in some effort into recognising and understanding when things started to go wrong. Look to the communication in your relationship and consider what has changed since you first set out. Above all dont forget that relationships take time and effort to keep them alive which is no more than such a special union deserves.
